Five people have died in a fire at a block of flats in Antwerp caused by a technical fault

At least six people have died and several others have been injured in a fire that broke out at 10 am in a ten-storey block of flats in Antwerp: this is according to the Belgian police.
A thick plume of smoke is rising from the eighth of the building’s ten storeys in the Linkeroever district, on August Vermeylen Avenue.
According to the BBC, a dramatic video shows a man abseiling from his balcony through a neighbour’s window to escape the black smoke. The police say that more than 200 people live in the block of flats and that the bodies of several victims have already been found.
“In addition to the fatalities, there are also a significant number of seriously injured people, as well as several with minor injuries,” said Kim Bastiaens, a spokesperson for the Antwerp police.
Fire caused by a technical fault
The fire that broke out in a block of flats in Antwerp, killing at least six people, is believed to have been caused by a technical fault on the ground floor. This was reported by the fire service.
