Austin shooting: FBI investigation points to terrorism and links to US-Iran tensions
The bomber, a former resident of New York, has two previous convictions and there is speculation of a possible terrorist connection
The FBI is investigating a possible act of terrorism in connection with the shooting that killed three people, including the shooter, and injured 14, which broke out shortly before 2 a.m. in a well-known bar in the entertainment district of Austin, Texas.
According to the New York post, citing 'some sources', the shooter was a former New York City resident 'probably motivated by the US attacks on Iran.
The man, a US citizen originally from Senegal, had a Koran in his car and clothing described as Islamic garb when he opened fire in Buford's Backyard Beer Garden, near the University of Texas campus in Austin, according to sources familiar with the investigation still reported by the Ny Post, who said the bomber had some previous convictions.
"Obviously it is still too early to determine the exact motivation, but there were clues on the subject and in his vehicle that indicated a potential link to terrorism," Alex Doran, acting special agent in charge of the San Antonio FBI office, told reporters in an update Sunday. Three of those hospitalised are in critical condition, officials said.
