Australia is preparing to ban access to the streaming video platform YouTube for under-16s to protect them from 'predatory algorithms', Canberra announced today. 'Under-16s will not be able to access YouTube,' Labour Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said at a press conference. "We want Australian parents to know that we support them." For her part, Communications Minister Anika Wells said: 'There is a role for social networks, but not for predatory algorithms that target children.

So far, no details have been disclosed on how the measure, which is expected to come into force on 10 December, will be implemented. The Australian Parliament has already passed a Web Regulation Act in 2024, which prohibits children under 16 from accessing social networks such as Facebook, Instagram, X and TikTok.
