Australia: fines doubled for social media platforms that circumvent the ban on under-16s
Up to 60 million euros. Albanese: "Big Tech aren’t doing enough"
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Australia intends to double the fines imposed on social media platforms that circumvent the ban on access for under-16s. Fines could reach 99 million Australian dollars (60 million euros) in the event of repeated breaches of the regulations. The government announced this in a statement. The government also aims to grant greater powers to the digital sector regulator, which is currently investigating possible breaches by Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube.
"It is clear that the tech giants are not doing enough to comply with the law; there are still too many children on social media," said Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. "These changes reflect the seriousness with which we view any failure by social media companies to meet their obligations."
