The Trump effect also hits Australia: with 55 per cent of the count completed but only 14 seats still to be filled, the Australian Labor Party of outgoing premier Anthony Albanese won 86 MPs, ten more than the absolute majority threshold.
The national-liberal coalition (widely favoured at the start of the election campaign) only picked up 40 MPs, among whom the Liberal leader Peter Dutton, defeated in his constituency of 24 years, will be missing; another ten seats went to independent candidates, while the Greens are still at zero.
Anthony Albanese will then be reappointed as prime minister, becoming the first premier to win two consecutive elections since John Howard in 2004.
The first statements by Anthony Albanese
."Thank you to the Australian people for the opportunity to continue to serve the best nation in the world," the Labor leader told a cheering crowd at an election party in Sydney. "From tomorrow, back to work." So said Anthony Albanese in his first statements after the vote relayed by Abc, with the promise that 'from tomorrow we will resume this task with new hope, new confidence and new determination'. Re-elected premier, he promises that Labour will 'govern for all Australians'.
'Today the Australian people voted for Australian values: for fairness, hope and opportunity for all. For the strength to show courage in adversity and kindness to those in need,' Albanese said again.
