'It is up to Fiat to take social responsibility, it is up to Stellantis to relaunch the car in Italy and we have been waiting for an answer for a long time. The government has done its part, Stellantis has not'. This was said by the Minister for Enterprise and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso , in his speech at the Rimini meeting. 'Focus on plan, government create conditions,' was the carmaker's reply after the minister's words.

Urso: the government did its part, Stellantis did not

'In the first meeting with CEO Tavares,' recalled Minister Urso, 'he asked me two things to plan the development of the Italian car to reach the target of one million vehicles. The first was to remove the Euro 7 obstacle, and we succeeded, so Stellantis announced the extension of some models. Then he asked us for an incentive plan commensurate with production in Italy, and we did the biggest car incentive plan, with one billion euro. We had as objectives the scrapping of highly polluting vehicles and then allowing the electric car to be within the reach of the weaker classes. We achieved these goals, but that of supporting Italian production was not achieved. Because it was Stellantis that had to increase production in our country in order to respond to the demands called for by the incentives'.

"If Stellantis does not confirm gigafactory we will move Pnrr resources"

.

And again: 'On investments, Stellantis must give an answer and it must give it soon. If it does not give us a positive answer on the gigafactory project in Termoli, for example, Pnrr resources will be allocated to others. We cannot lose Pnrr resources because Stellantis does not honour its commitments,' the minister added. And again: 'It is now up to Stellantis to relaunch the car in Italy and we have been waiting for these answers for too long, a long time. He must tell us 'how he wants to achieve the growth of the vehicle system in our country in order to reach the goal of one million vehicles in which plants, whether they are really going to make the fifth car in Melfi, whether they are really going to invest in Pomigliano, whether they are really going to make the 500 hybrid in Cassino, whether they are going to make the 500 hybrid in Mirafiori. Stellantis must also tell us with what investments, because it cannot present us with development contracts, as has happened, in which it demands resources from the state to reduce employment. It is Stellantis that must understand that development contracts are made with those who create employment, not with those who reduce it'.

"Fees should be commensurate with country's social sustainability"

.

Then a reference to the remuneration of the ceo Carlo Tavares . "Managers' remuneration should be commensurate not only with shareholder dividends but also with the social sustainability of the country, with the jobs it provides." And again: 'We expect the company to take social responsibility for relaunching the automotive industry in Italy,' he added.

"Need at least a second car manufacturer"

.

The minister then recalled that the government had 'signed 4 memorandums with 4 major Chinese car manufacturers that would like to invest in Europe and consider investing in Italy, to realise electric mobility in our country, to produce and not to assemble'. And he said he was convinced that 'a single car manufacturer cannot supply a country like Italy with so many models to satisfy all consumer needs. A single manufacturer cannot do more than what we hope it will do, i.e. one million vehicles. At least one more manufacturer is needed to support the automotive supply chain. Because we must reach a production level of at least one and a half million vehicles in our country, we need at least one more manufacturer'.

Stellantis: focus on plan, government creates conditions

"It is essential that all the players in the value chain - including the government - contribute to creating the right conditions for competitiveness, market dynamics, and also for peace of mind, which are indispensable for achieving the epochal transition that mobility is undergoing". This is what Stellantis said in a note in which 'with reference to today's statements, which follow the numerous ones of the past few days', it reiterated that 'it remains focused on the execution of the plan for Italy for the coming years, already communicated to the trade union partners, which includes important projects such as that for Mirafiori 2030'.

"Problem is not labour cost but energy, solve it with nuclear power"

The minister went on to emphasise the importance of an industrial policy that invests in companies and work, and pointed out that in Italy the 'problem is not the cost of labour, but of energy', which 'can only be solved in one way, by developing renewable energy, as we are doing, and at the same time planning the production of nuclear energy in our country. There is no other solution because after oil we will turn off the taps to gas and we will have no other continuous source of energy but nuclear'. For this reason,' he added, 'we are planning to build advanced third-generation reactors in Italy, i.e. industrial and modular ones that will be installed wherever they are requested. I hope it will be possible to announce it within this year'.

"Working on structural housing plan for workers"

.

Urso went on to announce that the government is 'working with Confindustria' and 'we will also soon discuss with the trade unions one of the other significant problems in addition to the cost of energy, namely the cost of housing'. Companies would like to hire but 'those who are willing to work are not in a position to pay for housing. So we are developing, together with the Ministry of the Economy, Infrastructure and Labour, a structural housing plan for industries' that 'allows companies to build the housing they need for their workers, also using state-owned areas'.
