The State examination ends with the interview, which lasts an average of 60 minutes and is used to assess the disciplinary and transversal skills acquired by the candidate, but also to highlight the candidate's actual level of preparation. It is assessed by the board with a maximum of 20 points out of a total of 100 for the entire State examination.

As of this year, there is practically a return to normality: the oral exam will therefore be held in a multi- and interdisciplinary key to assess the student's ability to grasp the connections between different areas of knowledge by linking them together. The commission will ask the student to analyse texts, documents, experiences, problems that the candidate is called upon to connect and argue in a critical and personal manner, also using the foreign language.

Interview preparation

.

At the plenary meeting, the chairman, having consulted the commissioners, shall determine the starting date of the interviews for each class and, by drawing lots, the order of precedence between the two classes and, within each class, the order in which the candidates shall be called according to the alphabetical letter. If the chairpersons of the commissions share one or more commissioners, they will not draw lots, but will agree on the dates for the start of the interviews. The daily number of candidates, except for justified organisational needs, shall not exceed five. The interview calendar is then made available in the private area of the electronic register for insiders; outsiders receive it by email. This is followed by the preliminary meeting of each class during which the arrangements for conducting the interview, the criteria for awarding the supplementary mark, the so-called 'bonus', and those for awarding honours are decided.

The Committee

.

The interview is held in the presence of the entire commission. During the interview, if the commissioners are absent for no more than one day, all examination operations for that day are interrupted. In the event of absence of more than one day, the commissioner is replaced for the remainder of the examination.

The interview stages

.

The interview takes place in a single time frame with four phases. The chairman has the important role of taking care of the balanced articulation, the duration of the interview phases and the involvement of the different disciplines, while avoiding a rigid distinction between them. It opens with the analysis of material chosen by the sub-committee, aimed at encouraging discussion on the conceptual nodes characterising the various subjects and their interdisciplinary relationship.

Baccalaureate students must also critically analyse, by means of a short report or multimedia work, the experiences carried out within the transversal skills and guidance pathways, highlighting the significance and impact of these activities on post-diploma study or work opportunities. During the interview, the candidate must also demonstrate that he/she has acquired the Civic Education competences as defined in the school curriculum and set out in the activities outlined in the class council document. Among this year's innovations (L.150/2024, art. 2, c.1, lett.c), in the event that the internal candidate has obtained a six-tenths behavioural assessment in the final examination, the interview also covers the critical essay on active and solidarity-based citizenship.

Finally, a special area is dedicated to the oral discussion of the results of the two written tests.

The score

.

The sub-committee proceeds to score the interview on the same day on which the interview is held. The entire sub-committee, including the chairperson, scores the interview. The board has 20 points for the evaluation of the interview. In order to standardise behaviour among the various committees at national level, the evaluation grid, annexed to the order (Annex A), which adopts indicators and descriptors of a transversal nature, is used for scoring.

The choice of materials

.

Before each day of the interview, the commission prepares and assigns the materials from which the oral phase starts, customised for each candidate. The material may consist of a text (e.g. passages of poetry or prose, in Italian or foreign language), a document (e.g. ideas taken from newspapers or magazines, photos of artistic heritage and monuments, reproductions of works of art, but also graphs, tables with significant data), an experience, a project, a problem (e.g. problem situations linked to the specific nature of the address, simple practical and professional cases). For the choice, the sub-committee takes into account the curriculum of each student as well as the educational path actually carried out, illustrated in the document of each class council, in compliance with the national indications for high schools and the guidelines for technical and professional institutes.

Deferral for the sick

.

For candidates who, for a serious and documented reason, recognised as such by the committee, cannot attend the interview on the scheduled date, it is possible to schedule another session (supplementary session) within the deadline set out in the schedule decided by the committee, subject to a request being sent to the chairman by the day following the absence. If this is not possible, the interview shall be held in a special session, on a date set by the Ministry, normally in September.

Special cases

.

The interview of candidates with disabilities or specific learning disorders takes place according to the indications provided by the class council in the individualised education plan or customised teaching plan. For the Esabac and Esabac-techno project (international option routes with the awarding of the Italian and French double diploma) a third written test on the specific disciplines is envisaged. With regard to knowledge and skills in the non-linguistic discipline (Dnl) conveyed in a foreign language through the Clil (Content and language integrated learning) methodology, the interview may ascertain these if the teacher of the discipline involved is an internal member of the commission. For candidates from adult education centres (Cpia) who have not taken the Pcto, the interview assesses the person's cultural heritage starting from their professional and individual history.
