Microsoft is giving up its observer seat on the board of OpenAI. The US software company, which has invested USD 13 billion in the ChatGPT creator, sent a letter to OpenAI announcing its withdrawal from the board of directors; in the letter, the Bill Gates-founded giant states that the presence of its representative on the board 'was not necessary after the governance of the artificial intelligence start-up had improved significantly over the past eight months'.

The same decision, according to the Financial Times, was taken by Apple, which was to take a similar role as an observer.

The double decision comes at the same time as the global antitrust authorities are stepping up their scrutiny of Big Tech's influence in artificial intelligence.

Last month, European regulators said they would investigate Microsoft's rivals over their exclusive use of OpenAI technology. The move underlines the growing pressure on one of the world's most valuable companies, which hopes to leverage OpenAI's artificial intelligence services for its Bing, Edge and Windows platforms.

An OpenAI spokesperson said that the company will adopt a new engagement approach, holding regular meetings with strategic partners such as Microsoft and Apple and investors such as Thrive Capital and Khosla Ventures.
