Baglietto celebrates 170 years of activity, looking at environmental protection. The shipyard founded in 1954, in Varazze (Savona), by Pietro Baglietto (who began building small hulls in his backyard), drew the energy for the party organised in La Spezia, on 18 October to celebrate the anniversary of its foundation, from the new Bzero system. That is, a plant for the production of green hydrogen from sea water, filtered and deionised through the use of electrolysers, powered by renewable energy sources.

Thanks also to the ceremony, then, came the confirmation of the operation of the Bzero project, which envisages, from the beginning of 2025, the use of the green hydrogen production station to cover part of the electricity needs of the La Spezia-based Baglietto shipyard (which has long since moved its headquarters from the West to the East of Liguria). After the industrial site, the boats will arrive; the company's top management, in fact, expects the green hydrogen system to be fitted on board boats, starting in 2026.

Today Baglietto, which has been owned by the Gavio group since 2012, operates in two shipyards: the main one, as mentioned, is in La Spezia and a second one is in Carrara. The first one, with an extension of 35 thousand square metres, focuses on the construction of steel, aluminium and custom-made models: boats up to 65 metres long. In recent years, the entire production plant has been renovated with the construction of three new sheds for boats up to 65 metres and docks equipped to accommodate units up to 70 metres, as well as the installation of the largest travel lift in the Mediterranean, capable of lifting boats up to, precisely, 70 metres.

The Carrara shipyard, on the other hand, consists of two areas of 5,000 square metres each, with 8 sheds in total, destined for the construction of military boats and pleasure yachts up to 50 metres, as well as a number of sportfisherman models marked Bertram, another brand owned by the Gavio family. The two Italian offices are flanked by a branch (Baglietto Americas) in Fort Lauderdale (Florida), set up to preside over one of the company's strategic markets, and a recently opened sales office in Australia; as well as three new representative offices, in Brazil, the Dominican Republic and Singapore.

The company delivers five to seven yachts per year, ranging in size from 35 to 60 metres. There are currently 20 yachts under construction, for a complete orderbook until 2027.

As for the models offered, the yard has four main ones: the more 'traditional' line, the TLine, in steel and aluminium, which includes models from 52 to 65 metres and is designed by Francesco Paszkowski, the seagull brand's designer of reference for more than twenty years; The Fast line, in aluminium, which offers a 42-metre model and a 50-metre model, is also designed by Paszkowski; then there is the Dom line, with aluminium cruisers from 35 to 42 metres, created by designer Stefano Vafiadis; finally, the XO line, with explorer boats designed for long-range crossings. In addition to these models, which are already characterised by a high level of customisation, there is the fully custom production, consisting of totally customised yachts, built at the request of individual owners.

The fact that Baglietto is focusing on the development of solutions for the energy transition in the nautical sector is in line with the drive for innovation that has always characterised the shipyard, right from its origins. After its foundation in 1854, a first significant turning point came in 1876, with the launch of Rosy, the first 7.5-metre racing vessel. This was followed by Miss Mary which, in 1891, earned the yard the title of regatta champion, the first in a long series of awards.

In 1888 the yard built La Barchetta, requested by a group of Genoese nobles, to give as a gift to Pope Leo XIII. And in 1906 the Giuseppina was to be the largest private yacht in the world at the time: 22 metres long and with an internal combustion engine, it marked the real beginning of the modern era in yacht building. During the First World War, the shipyard then concentrated on the production of seaplanes and anti-submarine motorboats (Mas). It also produced the boat Alcyone for Gabriele d'Annunzio.

An important step in the yard's innovation came in 1951, with Pietro Baglietto, grandson of the founder of the same name. It was he who introduced, in the 1960s, the use of marine plywood, which improved efficiency and reduced the weight of boats. He also conceived the aft deck as a living and relaxation area. The invention of the flying bridge revolutionised luxury yacht living and became a standard in the yachting world. From these years are the island series, with models such as Elba, Ischia, Menorca and Majorca, which mark an important chapter in the yard's history. Only three examples of Majorca were built, one of which was owned by the Aga Khan.

From the 1980s is the Chato, a 26-metre capable of reaching a speed of 62.5 knots, thanks to a water-jet propulsion system. Also between the 1980s and 1990s Baglietto entered the superyacht market. Meanwhile, the shipyard attracted a clientele of entrepreneurs and celebrities; one of them was Gianni Agnelli, who had several boats built by Baglietto.

In 1994 the collaboration with Paszkowski began, which continues to this day. In 2012, after a crisis also caused by the global economic default, Baglietto was acquired by the Gavio group, under whose leadership, and with the collaboration of CEO Diego Deprati (formerly at the helm of Mondomarine and then of the Cerri shipyards, also owned by Gavio and merged, in 2020, into Baglietto), the company has modernised its structures and offer, "while maintaining," explains Deprati, "the traditional values of the brand.
