Bagnoli on the way to the America's Cup: the reclamation of the coastline has begun
Work is underway to seal the floodplain, that accumulation of mud facing the sea that will become a platform for sailing teams
The time has come for the backfill: the redevelopment of the area facing the sea of the former steel citadel has begun. The building site has been opened and preparatory work is underway. Within this month - the word of the vice-commissioner Filippo De Rossi - the works for the securing with sealing will start. It will be a 20-hectare platform at the service of the America's Cup teams.
This is an important stage in the eternal history of Bagnoli. Debris of various kinds, some of it polluted, has accumulated on the area facing the sea: this is the so-called 'colmata', which over the years has been one of the most controversial points in the reclamation of Bagnoli. It has been the subject of bitter conflict between those in favour of removing it (to take it where?) and those who instead argued that it could be tombed.
A third, intermediate solution prevailed. It became possible after Decree-Law No. 60 abolished the restriction of full removal in 2024. A large part of this area will be cleared of layers of vegetation and sand (which will be removed) and then covered with sealing materials. It will become a platform of about 20 hectares, which will be used, on the occasion of the America's Cup, for movable structures to serve the teams. .
This is one of the interventions on the sea that have been brought forward from the previous timetable in order to prepare the necessary facilities for the sailing competitions scheduled to take place from the summer of 2026. For this, a new plan for the alignment with the America's Cup has been prepared and is partly being finalised, which was first approved in the control room on 4 August 2025, and then went through the services conference at the end of November. Today the demolition of the old central jetty (pictured), which is dilapidated and needs to be removed, begins. And the transport of materials for the construction of some reefs to protect the basin is underway.
The entire Environmental Remediation and Urban Regeneration Programme envisages a public investment of about 1.7 billion from Commission Funds and from Development and Cohesion Funds 2014-2020 and 2021-2027. In total, public funding will mainly cover costs for environmental remediation (on land and at sea, about 1 billion); for infrastructure (270 million); and for regeneration and other related activities (about 430 million). Public funding will be supplemented by private funding related to the urban regeneration process as well as other public sources necessary for the realisation of infrastructural works outside the Area of Significant National Interest of Bagnoli (by other institutional entities).
