The banking sector needs artificial intelligence solutions that protect sensitive customer data and are fully compliant with sector-specific regulations. In fact, generalist models are not specifically trained on banking terminology or the regulated standards and controls required by financial institutions, risking, in software development projects in the sector, not properly considering specific regulations, exposing confidential information and compromising data sovereignty.

With this in mind, FairMind, an Italian start-up specialising in governance and orchestration of AI agents to automate the softwar development cycle, has developed BankGPT, defined as the first small language model (Slm), specialised for the banking sector and funded by the European Union through the EuroHpc Joint Undertaking programme.

BankGPT is an AI model specifically trained to meet the needs of the financial services industry and operate in private cloud and on-premises, giving financial institutions full control over sensitive data with high accuracy. Technological sovereignty is ensured by integrating the model into the FairMind Studio platform, which ensures comprehensive governance, operations orchestration and end-to-end regulatory compliance.

BankGPT aims to concretely transform the banking software development cycle: the platform orchestrates specialised proprietary AI agents that automate the entire workflow, from the generation of regulatory-compliant business requirements, through the translation into detailed technical specifications, to software implementation plans that meet the security and compliance standards of the financial industry.

FairMind Studio agents process banks' proprietary documentation with complete confidence, generating accurate code through the orchestration of third-party coding agents driven by BankGPT's vertical intelligence. This approach enables concrete use cases such as legacy modernisation of core banking systems, automation in software architectural design, automatic generation of compliant technical documentation and accelerated onboarding on complex codebases.

The project was developed in partnership with Crédit Agricole Group Solutions for training and funded by the EuroHpc Joint Undertaking through the FFplus programme. The high-performance computational infrastructure was provided by Cineca, with technical support from the National Competence Centre for Hpc (Ncc Italy).

The selection for the European FFplus grant, managed by the Digital Europe Programme, recognised FairMind as one of the most promising companies in the field of artificial intelligence applied to software development.
