Barilla is investing 100 million in the South; a new pasta production hub in Foggia
The project, running from 2028 to 2030, involves new facilities and strategic acquisitions to strengthen the company’s presence in southern Italia
A €100 million integrated pasta production hub in Foggia, Puglia. Barilla is reviewing its industrial structure in Southern Italia, improving the Group’s sustainability, logistics and production efficiency; by 2025, it is projected to have a consolidated turnover of 4.837 billion euros and 8,823 employees worldwide. It is also redefining the role of certain production sites, partly through the involvement of industrial partners capable of ensuring their continuity and supporting their development. A strategy designed “to remain competitive in a challenging market such as the pasta sector”, explains the company’s Head of Operations for Meal Solutions, Giovanni Palopoli, who confirms “our industrial commitment to Southern Italy”.
The project, which is set to take shape between 2028 and 2030, involves the construction of a new-generation mill to serve the existing pasta factory, creating new jobs. At the same time, proposals submitted by Pastificio Liguori S.p.A. for the acquisition of the Marcianise plant (Caserta) and by Molino Casillo S.p.A. for the mills in Altamura (Bari) and Castelplanio (Ancona) are at an advanced stage of negotiation. For both transactions, the Group – which has already begun discussions with the trade unions regarding the details of the business plan – considers job security for all those involved to be a ‘fundamental prerequisite’.
Liguori and Casillo have already expressed their willingness and commitment to maintaining production continuity at the sites concerned, safeguarding jobs and skills in their respective regions and ensuring new prospects for long-term development. Furthermore, production for the Barilla Group will continue at these same sites, based on multi-year supply contracts with the purchasing companies. “The creation in Foggia of one of the Group’s strategic pasta hubs meets the need to improve our logistical and production efficiency,” Palopoli added – “At the same time, we have set the continued production at the sites involved, and the protection of jobs and the treatment of all those affected by the operations, as essential conditions.”
