Barilla closed 2024 revenues at €4.883 billion, 1.7% higher than the previous year net of the exchange rate effect. The figure was released today together with the presentation of the sustainability report of the Parma-based food multinational. A total of EUR 300 million was invested to support industrial development, while EUR 50 million was allocated to projects focusing on quality, food safety, nutrition and wellness, and sustainable packaging.

In the sustainability report it is written that in Italy, 100% of the packaging for pasta, sauces, pesto, breads, biscuits and snacks is now recyclable: the blue cardboard for pasta is made of virgin fibre from responsibly managed forests, and the renunciation of the transparent window has saved the placing on the market of about 126 thousand kilos of plastic per year. The group - which has 21 brands, 9 thousand employees and over 2 million tonnes of products manufactured by 2024 - uses 48% of its electricity from renewable sources. In the last five years it has installed 4MW of self-generating photovoltaic systems in its factories, but will reach a total of 24MW by 2030. Last year alone, two new green energy plants went into operation at the Rubbiano plant in the province of Parma: a 1.5 MWp plant for the sauces production site and a 0.3 MWp plant for the bakery site.

In the past two years, the volume of water recycled and recovered for production site facilities in water-stressed areas has also increased by 164%. In the Rubbiano plant alone, the volume of water recovered within the industrial cycle in the last two years has been equal to the contents of 24 Olympic-size swimming pools. By 2030, Barilla has set a target of 250,000 tonnes per year of raw materials from regenerative agriculture, 250% more water recycling in water-stressed areas, and 4,000 tonnes of packaging material saved thanks to eco-design projects.

Regarding the nutritional profile of its products, Barilla states that in 2024, 88% of the volumes sold will contain no more than 5 grams of sugar and no more than 0.5 grams of salt per portion.
