Baseball, Italia's fairytale comes to an end: Venezuela wins in the semifinals
Azzurri, leading 0-2 with Derenzo and Caglianone, suffered the South American comeback: the match ended 4-2
The dream is gone: it was Venezuela who qualified for the final of the World Baseball Classic, ending Italy's fairytale with a 4-2 comeback victory. The Azzurri national team, the real surprise of the tournament who managed to beat the United States, came close to achieving another feat after taking a 0-2 lead against the South Americans after two innings.
But Venezuela pulled off a three-run comeback in the seventh inning, gaining a decisive lead and sealing the victory that takes it into the final against theUnited States in Miami, in a contest that, in light of what has become relations between the two nations over the past three months, is set to have suggestive geopolitical readings. Zach Derenzo put the Italians ahead 1-0. Shortly afterwards came the doubling with Jac Caglianone. At this point Venezuela got back into the game, bringing the score to 2-1 and then ramping up with three runs in the seventh inning.
