The result of three years of collaboration between more than 70 companies, business partners and associations in the beauty and personal care industry, the EcoBeautyScore system enables consumers to easily and comparably assess the environmental impact of cosmetic products. This is why Beiersdorf adopts the EcoBeautyScore label for the Nivea and Eucerin brands.

The EcoBeautyScore takes into account 16 environmental dimensions and is based on a complex, data-driven, scientific approach. The result of this data analysis is a simple and straightforward score, ranging from A (highest score) to E (lowest score). The aim is to enable consumers to easily understand and compare the environmental impact of different products and brands. Developed through a collaborative industry-wide effort, the score aims to encourage consumers to adopt more conscious and sustainable purchasing and usage behaviour.

Created as a consortium initiative, it is the result of the joint work of more than 70 companies in the beauty and personal care sector. The scoring tool was launched in March 2025, allowing companies to evaluate their assortments. Currently, the tool is able to assign scores to four categories: Face Care, Body Cleansing, Hair and Styling. The publication of the first online scores represents a milestone after more than three years of collaboration between industry players. Looking ahead, the association will continue to develop the scoring system by extending it to other categories, with the aim of maximising its impact in the coming years.

As a result of Beiersdorf's efforts in recent years to reformulate products and redesign packaging with a view to reducing environmental impact, 99% of Nivea Face Care products and 100% of Eucerin's Face products scored A or B.

"Sustainability is a team sport,' says Vincent Warnery, CEO of Beiersdorf. 'It requires a joint effort by the entire industry to build a more sustainable future together. And it must always start with the needs of consumers. The EcoBeautyScore is a concrete testimony of the strength of collaboration, while offering real added value for those who choose our products'.

Gitta Neufang, chief R&D officer of Beiersdorf adds: 'We are thrilled to see the work done over the past years materialise in such a unique and tangible tool. This joint initiative is a significant step forward and we are grateful for the collaboration of more than 70 industry players. It is a project that is bound to leave a lasting and positive impact.

"Sustainability is an integral part of our constant path towards innovation, where environmental responsibility is integrated at every stage of the product life cycle. The EcoBeautyScore is a valuable tool that allows us to communicate the concrete value of our sustainable choices with clarity and transparency,' concludes Anna Grassano, general manager Beiersdorf Southern Europe.
