Beijing, Xi receives Carney. Canada will import 50,000 e-cars from China
Carney is the first Ottawa leader to visit the People's Republic in eight years, on a mission described by both sides as 'a turning point' in bilateral relations
China and Canada 'should adhere to a responsible attitude towards history, people and the world, and promote the creation of a new strategic partnership' based on 'a healthy, stable and sustainable development path' of mutual benefit.
President Xi Jinping said this to Canadian Premier Mark Carney, who met in the Great Hall of the People. China and Canada are forging "a new strategic partnership" by harnessing each other's strengths and "it is important to start it at a stage of division," Carney replied, citing areas with "historic advantages" such as agriculture, agribusiness, energy and finance.
Carney: 'Canada will import almost 50,000 e-cars from China'
Canada's relationship with China "is more predictable than its relationship with the US," Prime Minister Mark Carney said, announcing the import of up to 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles at 6.1 per cent reduced tariffs, lifting the substantial ban. Carney added in a briefing that the move is part of efforts to return the bilateral relationship to the pre-trade levels it has enjoyed in recent years, but as part of an agreement that 'promises much more' for Canada. By 1 March, Ottawa expects China to lower tariffs on canola seed imports to a combined 15 per cent.
