The entrepreneurial system in the North-East (which includes Trentino-Alto Adige, Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia) is not performing too well in this first quarter of 2024. According to data from the Companies Register, the first three months of the year opened with a negative balance of -1,786 companies, resulting from the difference between new registrations (13,134) and terminations (14,920). This translates into a drop of 0.26%, more intense than in the rest of the country (- 0.18%), the South (-0.12%) and Lombardy (-0.11%), but less than in the North West (-0.36%).
The assessments become clearer when analysing the data at a more detailed territorial level. The region with the most pronounced negative balance is Veneto (-0.32%), with peaks of distress in Belluno and Rovigo (0.66% and 0.64% respectively), followed closely by Friuli-Venezia Giulia (-0.27%), pushed down by Udine (-0.42%).
Trentino-Alto Adige, on the other hand, shows an almost nil change, although at provincial level a strong disparity can be seen between Bolzano, which shows positive growth (+0.27%), and Trento, which sees a sharp decline in its entrepreneurial base (-0.34%).
Furthermore, looking at the legal nature of the companies, it can be seen that this downsizing can be attributed to a reduction in the number of partnerships, sole proprietorships (both at -0.50 per cent) or other forms (-0.92 per cent), rather than to corporations, which instead increased
by +0.38 per cent.
The sectoral trend is also interesting. Compared to the previous quarter, companies active in commerce lost 1,120 units, followed by agriculture (-728), manufacturing (-436) and accommodation and catering (-143). In contrast, professional, scientific and technical activities (+236), construction (+115) and the sectors related to rental, travel agencies (+104) expanded.
