"While we are making crucial choices on intergenerational equity, artificial intelligence, climate, social cohesion, we are witnessing a worrying phenomenon: universities, which have contributed so much to the well-being of the world, are being attacked".

The rector of the Bocconi University of Milan, Francesco Billari, said this loud and clear, in front of students, teaching staff, distinguished guests and authorities, on the occasion of the inauguration of the 2025-26 academic year. Moreover, 'this attack is also taking place in democracies, from the United States to Hungary, where ideological policies and identity pressures challenge autonomous academic innovation, censor programmes, limit freedom of research and the circulation of talent'.

And this, for the rector of the Milanese university, 'is a signal that concerns us all. Because if trust in universities is lost, one of the pillars of democracy is lost. It is in universities, in fact, that students' knowledge and social and emotional skills are developed. And it is from here that solutions, analyses, visions emerge."

In short, 'to attack the university is to strike at the space where, using the scientific method, the pluralism of ideas, the slowness necessary to understand, and reasoned dissent are cultivated. It means eroding the ground on which deeper freedoms are built: the freedom to think, to debate, to be active citizens'.

Opportunity for Europe

.

As bleak as it is, this scenario, according to Bocconi's president, Andrea Sironi, who opened the academic ceremony, "represents an obvious opportunity for Europe, which can encourage, at least in part, the return of male and female researchers, thus reversing the 'brain drain' that for decades characterised the relationship between the two continents and saw thousands of young people trained in European universities migrate to the United States".

The very title of the event, "Time to Make Choices", is basically a declaration of intent. Choosing to be there for the Milanese university means being actively committed to building a fairer, more open, more aware future. As demonstrated, for example, by Bocconi's numbers: applications to three-year degree courses for 2025-2026 mark a new record, with a 25% increase in international students. More than 64% of applications come from abroad: France and Turkey remain the top two countries, but for the first time the USA comes third. While internationalisation is also visible in the teaching staff and classes, with 120 nationalities represented.

Guests of Honour

.

Keynote speaker at the opening was also the president of the European Investment Bank, Nadia Calvino. Consistent with the political line of the EU (the 27 member states are the shareholders of the EIB, ed.), in these uncertain times "one of our priorities is to invest in security and defence by responding quickly to new realities," explained Calvino. That is why 'we have doubled our funding in the sector and will triple it again in 2025 to about 3.5 per cent of our total business'.

In particular, as the EIB, "we have guaranteed EUR 4 billion to support Ukraine since the beginning of the war, repairing critical infrastructure, rebuilding schools, kindergartens and hospitals, and ensuring a secure energy supply in the country."

During the academic ceremony, Elena Goitini, Ceo of BNL, was honoured as Bocconi Alumna of the Year while Alisée de Tonnac, co-founder and co-Ceo of SeedStars, as Emerging Leader and Adama Sanneh, co-founder and Ceo of the Moleskine Foundation, as Changemaker of the Year.
