Israel, final vote on death penalty expected in Knesset today
The Israeli parliament is preparing to vote today in second and third reading on the controversial bill presented by the far-right Otzma Yehudit party, which provides for the death penalty for people convicted of terrorism. According to the Times of Israel, 'it is likely that the bill will be passed, despite the pressure put by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, and the chairman of Otzma Yehudit to withdraw it'.
The bill stipulates that it is themilitary courts, without the need for unanimity, that decide the death penalty for those convicted of the murder of an Israeli 'committed with the intent to generate terrorism'. These courts judge exclusively Palestinians in the West Bank. The bill provides that military courts may commute the death sentence to life imprisonment in 'special circumstances'. Executions would take place byhanging within 90 days of sentencing.
"The Israeli death penalty law institutionalizes and legalizes the state mechanism for executing Palestinians, commented the Israeli human rights organization B'Tselem today, recalling that "since October 2023, Israel has killed at least 72.000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and at least 1,050 Palestinians in the West Bank" while "in the same period, more than 80 Palestinian prisoners have died in Israeli jails, which have been transformed into a network of torture camps where detainees are subjected to constant abuse and violence".
"The law is worded in such a way as to apply exclusively to Palestinians and aims to make the killing of Palestinians a normal and common means of punishment through various mechanisms," the NGO explained, "the law grants no discretion to military courts. Military judges will be required to sentence Palestinians found guilty of murder to death, except in 'special circumstances'. A unanimous vote is not required. A simple majority will suffice and the possibility of appeal will be extremely limited'.
"Only Palestinians are tried by military courts," recalls B'Tselem, "their tconviction rate is 96%, based largely on 'confessions!' extracted under duress and torture during interrogations. The sentence, execution by hanging, must be carried out within 90 days of sentencing, with no possibility of pardon. A designated prison officer will carry out the sentence'.
"The death penalty represents a total violation of the most basic human rights, first and foremost the right to life. Israel implements a comprehensive policy of killing and oppression against the Palestinian people in all the territories it controls. The death penalty law would provide the Israeli apartheid regime with an additional tool to promote this policy,' the NGO concluded.

Iran: 'No negotiations with the US since the beginning of the war, only proposals'
"We have not had any negotiations with the US in these 31 days. What has happened is a request for negotiations along with a number of proposals from the US that have come to us through some intermediaries, including Pakistan." This was written on X by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei denying Donald Trump's reports of "even direct" negotiations with Tehran.
"In a situation where US military aggression continues with intensity, we devote all our efforts and energy to the defence of the Iranian nation. We have already gone through similar experiences and we will not forget the betrayal of diplomacy, which occurred twice in less than a year," Baqaei concluded.

The Civil Rights Association of Israelhas filed an appeal to the High Court of Justice against the law on the death penalty for persons convicted of terrorism, which has just been passed by the Knesset. King of Jordan rejected Netanyahu's meeting requests
The office of Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu contacted King Abdullah of Jordan several times recently in an attempt to arrange a meeting between the two leaders, but the request was rejected. This was reported by broadcaster Kan, according to which, one of the reasons given by Jordan is that the king will not consider a meeting with Netanyahu as long as the Al-Aqsa mosque remains closed. Jordan considers itself the custodian of the site in the Old City of Jerusalem, while Israel only recognises Jordan's 'special role' in the site. The Jordanians also called on Israel to address settler violence, to ease restrictions on Muslim worshippers on the Temple Mount, where the Al-Aqsa Mosque is located, to sign a new water agreement, to allow more aid into Gaza, and to provide answers on the future of the Palestinian issue, but were not satisfied with Israel's responses.

"The world is facing yet another shock": the war in the Middle East "is clouding the prospects of many economies that had just begun to show signs of recovery from previous crises. The shock is global but asymmetrical'. This is stated by the International Monetary Fund, pointing out that 'although war may shape the economy in different ways, all roads lead to higher prices and slower growth'. A short-lived war "could send oil and gas prices soaring before markets can settle, while" a prolonged conflict "could keep energy costs high and put pressure on import-dependent countries," the Fund explains, pointing out that an "intermediate scenario - with persistent tensions, expensive energy, and hard-to-tame inflation - characterised by ongoing uncertainty and geopolitical risks" cannot be ruled out. The IMF then notes how 'much depends on the duration of the conflict, its extent and the extent of damage to infrastructure and supply chains'.

Iranian footballers protest: on the pitch with a backpack during the anthem

In the hands of each player, clutched to his chest, a purple schoolbag; on his arm, a black armband in sign of mourning: this is how the Iranian national football team appeared on the pitch before the friendly match against Nigeria, in protest during the national anthem to remember the children killed in the US bombing of the primary schools in the Iranian city of Minab in the early stages of the US-Israeli conflict with Iran.
The incident happened on 27 March at the Mardan Sports Complex stadium in Aksu, Antalya, Turkey. According to Fanpage.it, a spokesman for the national team explained that 'it was an idea born to pay tribute to the young victims of the Shajareh Tayyebeh school. According to the authorities in Tehran, the building that housed the school was hit during the first joint attacks by the US and Israel, causing the death of as many as 175 people, including 165 girls. According to reports in the New York Times at the time, the missile was indeed fired by the US military, but due to a mistake'. Nyt, 'new US weapon against school and gymnasium in Iran in February, at least 21 dead'
On the first day of the war with Iran, a weapon bearing the characteristics of a newly developed US-made ballistic missile was used in an attack that hit a gymnasium and an adjacent primary schools near a military base in southern Iran, according to weapons experts and a visual analysis by the New York Times. The US newspaper writes. Local officials quoted by the Iranian media said that this attack and others nearby in the city of Lamerd left at least 21 people dead. The 28 February attack occurred on the same day that a US Tomahawk cruise missile hit a school in the city of Minab, several hundred kilometres away, killing 175 people. In Lamerd's case, however, it was a weapon not tested in combat. The NYT verified videos of two attacks in Lamerd, as well as footage after the attacks. Times reporters and munitions experts found that the weapon's characteristics, explosions and damage were consistent with a short-range ballistic missile called a Precision Strike Missile, or PrSM, designed to detonate just above the target and project small tungsten projectiles outwards. Video footage of an attack, in a residential area about 270 metres from the gymnasium and school, shows the weapon in flight, with a distinctive silhouette matching the PrSM. The missile explodes in a large fireball in midair. Another video, taken from a security camera located directly in front of the gymnasium, shows the attack on the gymnasium and the adjacent school. Although the video does not capture an incoming missile, it clearly shows an explosion just above the structure.

"Actually, my preference would be to take the oil in Iran," the US president said, adding that opponents of this in the US are "stupid". According to reports, any attempt to control Iran's oil exports would likely involve seizing Kharg Island in the Gulf, through which most of the country's oil transits. Crude oil prices rose after the escalation in the region. Trump said he thought Iranian defences on Kharg Island were weak and that US forces could take it 'very easily', while noting that they might have to stay there 'for a while'.
