Bmw Italia and Eni signed a letter of intent to develop joint initiatives to support the energy transition of the road transport sector.
The aim of the agreement is to integrate biofuels into an ever-increasing range of e-mobility services. Hvo (hydrogenated vegetable oil), the diesel biofuel produced by Enilive and obtained from 100 per cent renewable raw materials, is an already available solution to contribute to the decarbonisation of transport: it can already be used in purity by validated engines and is distributed through existing infrastructures. The agreement is part of the current context of the mobility sector undergoing a profound transformation, involving car manufacturers as well as energy operators, in response to emission reduction targets.
The letter of intent concerns the development of initiatives centred on three pillars: support for sustainable mobility based on the principle of technological neutrality and on the synergy between the different energy solutions and vectors available, the realisation of new proposals in the field of biofuels, and the expansion of the infrastructure for electric mobility, for example through the identification of potential areas in which to install new Plenitude 'On the road' recharging hubs with the aim of offering Bmw customers an increasingly widespread network.
'Our approach,' said Massimiliano Di Silvestre, president and CEO of Bmw Italia, 'has always been based on technological openness and the desire to decarbonise through all available technologies, as long as they are highly efficient. In this sense we are convinced that the use of bio-fuels like HVO in purity on diesel engines is a great opportunity. And this applies both to our new BMWs and to the circulating fleet of around 500,000 BMWs in Italy, with immediate environmental impacts of up to 90 per cent reduction in GHG emissions. BMW has been ready for this technology since 2015, and we are proud to work with ENI and Enilive to promote biofuels on the market, as well as continuing to collaborate with Plenitude in the area of electrics, as regards charging facilities with dedicated offers for customers who choose our electric mobility".
The areas of collaboration include the launch of a potential test of Enilive's Hvo for Bmw's diesel engines and joint marketing campaigns with Plenitude to develop the electric charging network.
