BMW iX4: the coupé version of the iX3 makes its debut
The new electric SUV, whilst still based on the Neue Klasse, has a great deal in common with the iX3. Three engine variants are planned, with the 612 cv M60 xDrive representing the latest addition
Key points
BMW, one year after the debut of the iX3 – the first car to feature the electric platform and the Neue Klasse design – is unveiling the all-new iX4, which is, in effect, the coupé version of the battery-powered SUV. The two models share many features: the front end features the same narrow double-kidney grille, as well as the slender headlights integrated into the grille. The side profile is similar, at least up to the B-pillar, where the iX4’s roofline slopes downwards, forming an arc towards the rear. Here, a small spoiler is fitted, incorporating the brake light, whilst the rear lights echo the horizontal design of the iX3, with two light units on either side. 20-inch alloy wheels are also fitted as standard. It will go on sale by the end of the year.
The lower height of 4 cm
The new iX4 is exactly the same length and width as the iX3, and the wheelbase is also identical. The only dimension to change is the height, which is 4 centimetres lower. Designed in this way, the iX4 appears to slot into the BMW range between the i3 saloon and the iX3 SUV. Nine colours will be available when orders open, whilst from March 2027 a further three matt paint finishes – which BMW refers to as ‘Frozen’ – will be available. Numerous other colour options are also expected to follow as part of the Individual programme. The M60 xDrive, on the other hand, is fitted with 21-inch wheels and comes with blue brake callipers as standard, whilst red callipers are available as an option. There will also be the option to purchase 22-inch wheels, albeit as an optional extra.
Legroom and headroom
The interior of the new iX4 is similar to that of the iX3. At the centre of the dashboard is the 17.9-inch central screen for the multimedia system, whilst behind the steering wheel the traditional instrument panel has been replaced by a slim screen that spans the entire base of the windscreen from pillar to pillar, combined with a 3D head-up display.
The futuristic-looking four-spoke steering wheel has also been retained, whilst the sportier variants feature a dedicated steering wheel. Despite its coupé styling, rear passengers enjoy ample legroom and headroom: the second row of seats can be folded down in a 40:20:40 split, whilst seat heating is available as an option.
On sale by the end of the year
The BMW iX4 is set to be launched in Italia by the end of 2026 in two different versions, both featuring dual electric motors and all-wheel drive: the 40 xDrive and the 50 xDrive. The entry-level variant is rated at 374 cv and is powered by an 82.6 kWh battery, offering a claimed range of 638 km. Of the two versions, the one with the greater range is the 469 cv 50 xDrive, thanks to its more powerful 108.7 kWh battery, which allows for a maximum range of 828 km. In both cases, the high-voltage battery features an 800 V architecture, enabling fast charging at compatible charging points: up to 300 kW for the 40 and up to 400 kW for the 50.
