Bmw launches iX3 and i3 designed for China with Huawei software. Restyled 7 Series debuts

Bmw presented three new models at the Beijing sakone. These are the Chinese version of the iX3, the first model in the Neuve Klasse family of electrics. Accredited with a 108 mm longer wheelbase to meet the demands of Chinese buyers, plus an added technology package in tune with local expectations. Then it will be the turn of the i3 saloon and the revamped 7 Series. While the iX3 in Chinese mode repeats the styling of the European version, there is no shortage of distinctive details such as handles with a specific made-in-China design.

After the wheelbase, perhaps the other most important detail that separates the car from those destined for Western markets is the software. Indeed, Bmw's operating system integrates both the Huawei Harmonyos Next, along with Alibala and Deepseek artificial intelligence plus Amap navigation with 3D mapping. Bmw also offers a driver assistance system that includes exclusive scenarios of the Chinese territory to which very sophisticated Adas will be added, covering all urban environments including highways used for long-distance travel.

If the new door handles in line with Chinese regulations do not go unnoticed, there are also other changes. The new camera sensor is on the roof spoiler and the tailgate bears Chinese lettering ensuring that the version is specific to the local market. The most obvious change is the extra 108 mm added to the wheelbase which is increased to 3,005 mm. In reality, the Chinese iX3 is only 30 mm longer, for an overall length of 4,890 mm. What is gained is, above all, the passenger space, which is decidedly greater.

Bmw engineers have modified the car's chassis, but the electronics and platform suspension are also made in Neue Klasse, albeit aligned to the Chinese market. As far as the powertrain is concerned, however, the iX3 50L xDrive respects the solution planned for the rest of the world. The long-wheelbase version of the iX3 in addition to being exclusive to China is produced with local partner Bmw Brillance in the Shenyang factory. Bmw's breakthrough is in fact the first case of a Western manufacturer deciding to localise many specific solutions for the Chinese market.

The new electric Bmw i3, based on the Neue Klasse platform, also debuted in China as a premium electric sedan, targeting the local market in an exclusive long-wheelbase version featuring a more spacious cabin, a high range of up to 900 km and cutting-edge technology. Designed to combine the classic elegance of the Bavarian brand with electric efficiency, it will be the next flagship model for sales in the world's number one market. The i3's debut was anticipated by Night on the eve of the Beijing Motor Show.
