Bonomi Group, investments drive the record

Revenues at 380 million: in eight years ten acquisitions and over 200 million invested in plants and warehouses

The boxes shown by Aldo Bonomi at the Gussago production site, packed on pallets for dozens of metres, are bound for the United States. The cornerstone of the development of Rubinetterie Bresciane, the global leader in valves and the main asset of the Bonomi Group, which develops 30% of its business towards Washington. If in geographical terms it is from here that the group's main thrust arrives, to a new revenue record with a double-digit increase to 380 million, an all-time high, this outcome is in reality the tipping point of a precise and coherent investment strategy. Which has seen the group gradually increase in size through a flurry of acquisitions: no less than ten different operations from 2017 to date, the last of which was finalised at the end of last year.

A total commitment for M&A of EUR 140 million was added in parallel, both for Rubinetterie Bresciane and the other companies acquired, to an even more robust plan of investments in new plants and warehouses, over EUR 200 million from 2019.

'Our desire,' explains the entrepreneur, who leads the group together with his brother Carlo, 'is to leave the wealth produced within the company, so that we have the necessary resources for growth. Only by investing and innovating is it possible to remain competitive in a changing market'.

Investments can be seen in the Gussago factory, the group's main production site, where new machinery for the automatic assembly of valves, the 3D printer for metals that produces prototypes in a few hours, and innovative machining centres capable of processing lead-free brass or other special alloys are visible. These are necessary in order to be able to operate on a global scale, taking into account the different certifications and rules that exist in individual countries.

"It is one of the many aspects for which company size is important," Bonomi adds, "because having strong shoulders allows you to make the necessary investments, in this case to be able to produce valves and fittings in different alloys while adapting to local regulations and thus be able to compete worldwide.

A complex production organisation, that of the group, which must be able to efficiently handle small batches of finished valves, components, fittings and pipes, a mass of codes that far exceeds 20,000 units and sees massive production every day: 330,000 fittings, 66,000 finished valves.

Fully traceable items, moved and handled within the site with robust use of automation, including autonomous laser-guided trucks that pick up products at the end of the line and position them for packaging and 70 metre long automated warehouses, working in three shifts to handle demand.

'That remains high even now,' Bonomi explains, 'with orders that give us good visibility of the coming months. The idea this year is to exceed the 400 million revenue threshold for the first time, international scenario permitting'. By the end of the year the final choice for the future set-up in the United States, which already represents the strongest foreign subsidiary with 30 people involved, is expected. Even leaving aside the issue of duties, the group has long had the idea of approaching its core market, either by taking over a company in the stars and stripes or by starting from scratch with a new construction. 'We have already looked at at least a dozen companies,' explains the entrepreneur, 'but I have to say that the quality level is not comparable to ours: compared to Italy, they are really far behind in terms of machinery used and technology. In the future, we will continue to ship some components from here, but the knot is not only represented by duties, because operating in the United States directly also helps in financial terms, avoiding or lowering exchange rate risks and the costs of hedging a dollar sale'. Founded in 1901, the company, which already sees the fourth entrepreneurial generation at work, between organic growth and acquisitions has reached a workforce of one thousand employees in Italy and realises two thirds of its business through exports, as visually confirmed by the long sequence of pallets ready to be shipped worldwide. While outside, in an adjacent space, work is already underway to prepare a new 40 million investment, a 16 thousand metre logistics site on which some production will converge. 'Growth must continue,' explains Bonomi, pointing to the site, 'and the only way is this: invest.
