The sons of Judge Paolo Borsellino during the preliminary hearing, which was held on the morning of Thursday 11 July in Caltanissetta against four agents accused of distorting the investigation into the Via D'Amelio massacre, in addition to requesting the establishment of a civil plaintiff, called for the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the Minister of the Interior to be summoned as civilly liable. A similar request was made, through his lawyer, by the magistrate's brother, Salvatore.
The defendants in the trial are Giuseppe Di Gangi, Vincenzo Maniscaldi, Angelo Tedesco and Maurizio Zerilli, all former members of the 'Falcone-Borsellino' investigation group, accused of making false statements when testifying as witnesses during the first-degree trial on the deception of the investigation into the Via D'Amelio massacre.
State lawyer Giuseppe La Spina joined the civil action on behalf of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the Ministry of Justice, as a victim of the crime, and the Ministry of the Interior as an offended party. Maniscaldi's lawyer, Giuseppe Panepinto, asked for a time limit to examine the requests to form a civil plaintiff. The gup David Salvucci reserved his decision, setting the next hearing for 19 September.
Di Gangi and Maniscaldi were present in the courtroom. 'We are always present in every venue where the truth can be established,' said lawyers Fabio Trizzino and Vincenzo Greco, lawyers of Paolo Borsellino's sons, 'always faithful to the moral legacy of Judge Paolo Borsellino. We have the utmost trust in the institutions and the judiciary in particular. This trial is an appendix of the main trial that has been concluded and is part of a framework within which there seems to be the involvement of various institutional levels'.
