Brembo is expanding its presence in India, the world’s largest market for two-wheelers, by launching a joint venture with Ningbo SAFE Brakes Systems, the market leader in ABS systems for motorcycles in China. This will lead to the creation of a new company, BRSF Active Safety Solutions, dedicated to the production of ABS systems for the Indian motorcycling market. Brembo will hold a 60 per cent majority stake in the joint venture, which will focus on the local assembly and supply of ABS systems for motorcycles destined for the Indian market. Operations will be carried out at a dedicated production facility in Chakan (Pune), one of India’s main automotive and motorcycle industrial hubs, in the immediate vicinity of the Brembo India plant.
Specifically, the project involves “the installation of highly advanced and automated assembly lines,” states a press release from the Bergamo-based group, “reflecting the company’s strong focus on quality, efficiency and industrial excellence”. The plant will employ around 50 people, with a gradual increase in line with production volumes and the location of the supply chain.
“The joint venture with Ningbo SAFE Brakes Systems reflects our commitment to supporting the gradual evolution of motorcycle safety standards in India,” said Andrea Paganessi, Chief Operating Officer of Brembo’s Motorcycle Division. “Within this joint venture, our role is to translate this shared vision into efficient, localised industrial operations. Together with Brembo, we are creating a production platform focused on quality, reliability and the specific needs of the Indian motorcycling market,” added Hill Shan, founder of Ningbo SAFE Brakes Systems.
India, as mentioned, is the world’s largest market for two-wheelers, with up to 25 million registered vehicles, characterised by solid growth rates, strong prospects for technological innovation and a growing focus on safety (recently, the Indian Ministry of Road Transport and Highways extended the requirement for anti-lock braking systems to all two-wheeled vehicles sold in the country, regardless of engine capacity).
