Brescia the renewable capital of Italy. According to Terna data for 2024, the Lombardy province holds the record for installed power. Specifically for efficient power, i.e. the maximum amount of electrical power that plants can produce under optimal conditions for an extended period of time. Influencing the result is the park of dams in the mountainous part of the province. In the Brescia area, there are 2,260 MW of hydroelectric (64% of the total), 1,081 of photovoltaic (31%) and 183 of bioenergy (5%) renewable plants.

Foggia and wind power

.

The second province with the largest installed renewable capacity is Foggia, although in this case it is wind farms that are the most important: 2,690 MW of wind power plants (77% of the total), 737 MW of solar power (21%) and 62 MW of bioenergy (1%) are operational here. In recent years, the title of Italy's renewable capital has been disputed between Foggia and Brescia, with the former leading the way when its wind farm was growing, and the latter coming out on top in 2024 thanks to the local development of photovoltaics, which increased by 22% compared to the previous year.

The thrust of hydropower

.

Third in the special ranking is the province of Bolzano, driven by hydro: 1,968 MW (78% of installed renewable capacity). Sondrio, Turin and Trento follow: all driven by their dam parks. Respectively 2,269 MW (95% of the provincial installed green capacity) in Sondrio, 1,130 MW (52% of the total) in Turin and 1,659 (81% of the total) in Trento. In seventh position is the province of Viterbo, the Italian photovoltaic champion with 1,579 MW installed (93% of its renewable capacity, with a growth of 143% compared to 2023). This is followed by Cuneo, strong on photovoltaics, and Potenza, Avellino and Trapani, driven instead by wind power.

Primary Lombardy

.

The provincial results are also reflected in the regional ranking. First in terms of installed renewable capacity is by far Lombardy with 5,225 MW of hydroelectric (a quarter of the almost 20,000 at Italian level), 4,959 MW of photovoltaic (up 22% compared to 2023) and 993 MW of bioenergy (+1%). Second is Puglia with 3,629 MW of solar (+9%), 3,234 of wind (+4%) and 334 MW of bioenergy (+0.4%). Third is Piedmont with 3,083 MW of photovoltaic (+20%), 2,834 MW of hydroelectric (-0.4%), 347 MW of bioenergy and 18 MW of wind power. They are followed by Veneto and Emilia Romagna driven by solar energy, Trentino Alto Adige by hydroelectric power, Campania by wind energy, Lazio by solar energy, Sardinia, Calabria and Tuscany, the latter being the only one to boast an 817 MW park of geothermal plants, which corresponds to 27% of its installed renewable energy.
