Brescia-based Ab ready to supply CHP plants for data centres in the US
Will supply 250 MW capacity cogenerators for data centres in Texas and Wyoming
Key points
Ab has won an order worth over EUR 200 million in the USA: it will supply cogeneration plants with a total capacity of 250 megawatts to power future data centres dedicated to the development of artificial intelligence in Texas and Wyoming. They will be built between 2026 and 2027.
The agreement, signed through Ab Energy USA with Conduit Power Llc, an independent power producer and provider of distributed generation solutions, involves the construction in Italy and then the delivery of 75 cogeneration modules equipped with selective catalytic reduction systems to cut CO2 emissions. They will use gas, or biomethane, to produce the electricity needed by the data centres, and are also ready for the eventual use of hydrogen mixtures.
U.S. presence
The initiative consolidates the presence of the company from Orzinuovi (Brescia) in the US, where the group has been operating since 2012 and where it recently set up its new headquarters in The Woodlands (Texas). It also strengthens the strategic partnership with Conduit Power, which aims to develop further projects for a total capacity of 300 MW by 2027.
"Bringing our technology, entirely designed and manufactured in Italy, where we want to continue to invest, to the service of data centres that power artificial intelligence also in the US is a source of pride and demonstrates how innovation and sustainability can become a global competitive advantage," comments Ab president Angelo Baronchelli.
Growing market
"This order is very important. For us it is one of the first applications of this type, certainly the first of this size, with a strong development perspective. The market is getting off to a strong start in the US and growth will then also affect Europe and Italy. We have a pipeline of a few thousand MW that will be grounded in the next five years. This technology is the best from the point of view of efficiency, flexibility and network management because it brings production close to the end users. For data centres, the US will need large investments in distributed energy. And despite the tariffs, which do have a bearing, an Italian company like ours managed to be a winner and win a tender that was international,' explains the president of Ab.
