Brignone gold in the giant slalom, Vittozzi gold in the biathlon. For Italia also snow silver and bronze in cross-country skiing
A very busy Sunday for the Azzurri, with races spread across Cortina, Anterselva, Livigno, Tesero, Predazzo and Milan
Gold encore for Federica Brignone who, after her masterpiece in the Super-G, also took the gold medal in the Giant Slal at the Games in Milan Cortina. The woman from Valle d'Aosta, reigning world champion in this speciality, thus conquers her fifth career Olympic medal and remains on the Olympic podium between the wide gates after the bronze in PyeongChang 2018 and the silver in Beijing 2022.
Immediately after crossing the finish line in the race that gave her her second gold medal at the 2026 Games, Brignone cheered for her victory and her rivals - Sweden's Hector, second, and Norway's Stjernesund, third - rushed up to her in the centre of the parterre of Cortina's Olimpia delle Tofane and knelt down in admiration: then, the gesture of lowering her arms to the ground, as if to 'venerate' the strongest.
Only an eighth place in the women's giant slalom for Sofia Goggia. Third at the end of the first run, the Italian started well, but lost a lot in the second part of the race, thus finishing far from the podium. Unlucky Lara Della Mea: for a long time in the lead thanks to an excellent second run, the alpine skier from Tarvisio slipped to fourth place by only 5 hundredths.
Biathlon, Vittozzi's comeback: gold in the pursuit
Another gold medal comes from the biathlon, in this Sunday to be framed for the Italian colours. The credit goes to Lisa Vittozzi who won gold in the biathlon pursuit race in Antholz. Silver went to Finland's Suvi Minkkinen and Norway's Marem Kirkeeide, bronze. The Italian remained error-free in the polygon, thus recovering four positions compared to yesterday's individual race.
Snowboard cross: Moioli and Sommariva silver in the mixed pairs race
