BYD is continuing its global expansion at a fast pace, so much so that the Chinese manufacturer could open another electric vehicle production site in Cambodia, following in the footsteps of Ford (which has been producing in the country since 2022) and Toyota, which has been active since May this year. The announcement was made by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, who revealed the news while presiding over a graduation ceremony at the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP). Manet said the final decision should come in 2025.
Cambodia hopes to attract more car manufacturers, some of which are changing their production strategies in response to geopolitical tensions. Its government wants to increase exports of vehicles and electronics to over USD 2 billion, generating more than 22,000 new jobs in the process. Manet assured potential investors in the auto sector that Cambodia has the human resources to feed industries that require specialised skills. BYD started selling its Shark 6 PHEV pickup in Cambodia last October.
