BYD Shark: the new plug-in hybrid pick-up makes its European debut to take on Ford and Toyota
The Chinese brand’s aim is to offer a vehicle that delivers superior performance compared to diesel-powered vehicles, whilst still offering adequate range and off-road capability.
Key points
The European pick-up market has a new player: the BYD Shark. By introducing its vehicle to Europe, the Chinese manufacturer aims to revolutionise the pick-up sector with its Super Hybrid DMO technology – where ‘D’ stands for Dual Mode and ‘O’ for off-road – offering an alternative to conventional diesel engines, such as those found in the Ford Ranger. Measuring 5,457 mm long, 1,971 mm wide and 1,925 mm high, the Shark is a double-cab model with five seats. It features a plug-in hybrid powertrain, complemented by a comprehensive range of technological features. The Shark’s design is characterised by a front end featuring slim headlights positioned either side of a horizontal light signature that spans the entire width of the vehicle, whilst the centre of the grille bears the BYD logo.
Double cab, 5 seats and off-road capabilities
The BYD Shark is part of the range of full-size pick-ups designed for the global market, including Europe. The double-cab body is paired with a wheelbase of 3,260 mm, a combination that provides a spacious cabin without compromising off-road capability. The side view, meanwhile, highlights the large, pronounced wheel arches, the plastic skid plates running along the bodywork and the integrated running boards – all details that emphasise the model’s off-road credentials. Rounding off the look are large 18-inch alloy wheels fitted with tyres specifically designed for use on mixed terrain.
Inside, there is a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster
The cabin focuses on technology and comfort, with a look much closer to that of an SUV than a traditional work vehicle. The dashboard features a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 15.6-inch central touchscreen display – the largest available in the pick-up segment. The front seats are sports seats, but they are also heated and ventilated. There is also a head-up display. Furthermore, all rear passengers benefit from a flat floor, nearly 90 cm of legroom and a seatback inclined at 27°, a design feature intended to enhance on-board comfort.
The features also include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
In terms of features, the vehicle is equipped with a 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system, 50 W wireless smartphone charging, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a sat-nav, 360-degree cameras and app-based updates. Furthermore, the load bed offers a capacity of 1,200 litres and can carry a payload of up to 790 kg – figures that ensure the BYD pick-up is suitable for both everyday use and professional requirements. With a towing capacity of 2,500 kg, the Shark can tow trailers or carry equipment. In short, it is a vehicle capable of meeting the needs of European users as well.
The platform is the Super Hybrid DMO for off-road vehicles
The new Shark is based on the Super Hybrid DMO platform, developed specifically for off-road vehicles. The system combines a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine producing 150 cv and 240 Nm of torque, used as a generator, with two electric motors: the front motor delivers 231 cv, whilst the rear motor produces 204 cv. The total power output is 436 cv and 650 Nm, enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. The 32.2 kWh Blade battery, integrated into the chassis using Cell-to-Chassis technology, guarantees a range of up to 90 km in 100% electric mode, as well as a total range of approximately 674 km.
