Cagliari, the former Marino hospital becomes a five-star hotel
The intervention is by Colonia Hotel Srl (owned by the Zuncheddu family, the publisher of the Unione Sarda). The accommodation facility will have a capacity of 127 beds and a volume of 18 thousand cubic metres. The intervention will exceed 12 million euro
A five-star hotel in the place of what was once the Marino hospital on Cagliari's seafront: the Region of Sardinia has given the go-ahead to the project, presented by the company Colonia Hotel Srl (owned by the Zuncheddu family, the publisher of the Unione Sarda group) for the redevelopment of the entire compendium of the Ex Colonia Marina Dux - Ex Ospedale Marino, declared of cultural historical and artistic interest (by ministerial decree), for tourism and accommodation purposes, with the main building to be used as a five-star luxury hotel.
"The project proposal also envisages the recovery and refunctionalisation of the existing buildings, such as the former emergency room building, the former hospital services building and the former flammable liquids storage building, destined to host additional services and suites, with a complementary offer to the hotel activity," the Region states.
The receptive structure will have a total capacity of 127 beds and a volume of 18 thousand cubic metres. The economic intervention will exceed 12 million euro.
"Four years have passed since the start of the procedures," reconstructs Diana Zuncheddu, partner and manager of the Colonia Hotel company, "and now we are preparing to update everything. It is clear that the costs will rise due to the increases and costs already sustained. The intervention envisages a consolidation and restructuring plan but not demolitions because the compendium "is bound by the Superintendence". It is no coincidence that the entire project is accompanied by a long and detailed report that reconstructs the entire scenario of the Sardinian capital's coastline.
"The most valuable part is the reinforced concrete," Diana Zuncheddu adds, "In the report accompanying the project, the modernity of the use of concrete and reinforced concrete is indicated. A futuristic structure for 1937 that still has an important validity today. On the horizon is the goal of bringing the family's hotel facilities on line.
"This structure will be a five-star hotel, and there is a desire to create synergy with the Abi D'Oru in Porto Rotondo and with Santa Gilla on the lagoon," Diana Zuncheddu argues further. "We will try to build a small system, with the idea of positioning ourselves on the level of the Abi D'Oru. A sort of network linking the north to the south of the island.
