The depot of Calenzano, where the accident of 9 December occurred, carries out reception, deposit (storage) and shipment of petrol, diesel and oil (kerosene). These products arrive at the Calenzano depot via two pipelines connected with the Eni refinery in Livorno, to be then stored in cylindrical atmospheric tanks (with fixed or floating roofs) while waiting to be sent to the loading shelters of the tankers.

This is what emerges from the information on the Eni site in Calenzano taken from the file of the Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale (Ispra). The management of tank filling and tank truck loading operations," reads the Ispra summary description, "is carried out through a control room. In the plant, which occupies an area of 170,300 square metres, the following main work areas are located: tank farms; tanker truck loading shelters (ATB); pump rooms; fire-fighting plant; pipeline arrival terminal; tax measurement systems; vapour recovery systems from the ATB loading shelters; water treatment plant; electrical cabins, electrical systems and various instruments.
