Campi Flegrei: a 3.6-magnitude earthquake struck during the night

An earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale struck the Campi Flegrei area during the night. The tremor occurred at 4.17 am at a depth of 3 km and was felt by residents in the Campi Flegrei towns of Pozzuoli and Bacoli, as well as in the western districts of Naples. The INGV’s Vesuvian Observatory has pinpointed the epicentre as being in the Arco Felice area of Pozzuoli, near Monte Nuovo.

The Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, convened a meeting of the Emergency Coordination Centre this morning in response to last night’s earthquake. The meeting was attended by the Mayors of Pozzuoli, Bacoli and Monte di Procida, the Director of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology – Vesuvius Observatory, the Regional Unified Civil Protection Operations Centre, the Civil Protection Department of the Municipality of Naples, the Fire Brigade, the ASL Napoli 1 Centro and Napoli 2 Nord local health authorities, the Regional Education Office, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, and the Volturno Autonomous Authority. The Director of the INGV pointed out that the 3.6-magnitude earthquake occurred near Monte Nuovo. Representatives of the City of Naples’ Civil Protection department and the mayors reported that, as things stand, no disruption to the public or damage to buildings has been reported in the area. The Metropolitan City reported that, as a precautionary measure, it had relocated the examination board for the Liceo Pitagora to another school building. Inspections are currently underway at other school buildings. Given the magnitude of the tremor, the Harbour Master’s Office will carry out an inspection of the sea walls in the affected area. Treni Italiani and the Phlegraean lines (Cumana and Circumflegrea) operated by EAV are running as normal.
