The Council of Ministers has approved the decree-law on fuel costs. The reduction in excise duty on diesel has been extended until 5 September, according to government sources. The cost of the measure is estimated to be around 110 million euros.
During the cabinet meeting, which lasted just under a quarter of an hour, a decree-law concerning the former Ilva was also approved, ‘on the operational continuity of facilities of national strategic interest’.
Following the expiry of the excise duty discount on diesel – which was extended today by the Council of Ministers until 5 September – the government intends to introduce new support measures to tackle high fuel prices, which will be “targeted on the basis of income”. The strategy, which was revealed yesterday by sources at Palazzo Chigi, was confirmed during today’s Council of Ministers meeting, according to various sources. The details of these measures will be assessed over the coming days.
