Premature to recognise the state of Palestine? "But why premature?, for us it is the solution". The Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, doesn't beat around the bush and responds in a trance-like manner to those who, like Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, although agreeing with the recognition of the state of Palestine, consider the solution premature. And to French President Emmanuel Macron, who said he agreed with the recognition, Parolin jokingly observed: "Since now, as you say, that we have recognised the State of Palestine: for us that is the solution, that is the recognition of two States living close to each other but also in autonomy and security".
Should all the G7 countries recognise this? "I believe so," Parolin observed on the sidelines of the Jubilee of Influencers, speaking of the attack on the Gaza parish, "for us this is the formula. To those who claim that the solution is premature, the cardinal reiterates: 'But why premature? In our opinion, the solution comes through direct dialogue between the parties with a view to establishing two autonomous state entities. Of course it is becoming increasingly difficult because of the situation in the West Bank. This does not help the realisation of the state of Palestine from a practical point of view. It seems to me that in New York there will be a conference promoted by France and Saudi Arabia to find the practical terms, hopefully it will bring results'.
"I have no other elements to make a different assessment," Parolin added. "We take the results from the Israeli army as good, insisting that we must be careful because the impression is that many times these mistakes are repeated. Special care must be taken to prevent places of worship and humanitarian institutions from being hit". This was said by the Cardinal Secretary of State on the sidelines .
