"Over the next few years, 1,300 dwellings will be built, of which about 950 in conventional or free housing and about 350 in conventional and social renting". This is the goal of the Consorzio Cooperativo Lavoratori (CCL) of Milan, which celebrated its 50th anniversary these days (it was founded in 1974 by Giacomo Previdi, from the Union of Cooperative Consortiums of Acli and Cisl), remaining relevant as it acts precisely with the aim of expanding the supply of affordable housing in the city.
"In these 50 years," said Alessandro Maggioni, president of the Consorzio Cooperative Lavoratori, "the housing built by Ccl in Milan and province has been about 14,000 with lower allocation and sale costs, with percentages varying between 30% and 80% compared to market prices.
In the last 15 years - through the Solidarnosc cooperative - Ccl has also increased the realisation of rental housing at agreed/social rents, having arrived, after the completion also of the projects in progress, at about 300 dwellings rented at rents between 55€/sqm/year and - at most - 90€/sqm/year. A generously sized one-bedroom apartment with CCL costs between €300 and €490 per month.
"Housing is at the centre of the administration's attention," added Milan's mayor Giuseppe Sala. "Guaranteeing decent, affordable housing is a priority, and we are working hard on it both in public housing and in social housing. These are areas in which Ccl has been working for 50 years with pragmatism and a sense of responsibility'.
CCL, through the cooperative instrument, has enabled the rescue of a number of failed real estate ventures, allowing the recovery of savings or obtaining housing for about 500 families.
Over the years, Ccl's numerous projects have included AAAarchitetticercasi - a project created together with Confcooperative and Fondosviluppo - an architecture competition for young people under 33. Finally, together with LUM and the Milan Polytechnic's DAsTU, the Consortium set up OCA - the Affordable Housing Observatory, a scientific tool made available to the city to collect data and contribute to the debate.
