Cdp, Inps, Gemelli and Investire: a pilot project of homes for the elderly in Rome

A complex model of homes for the elderly with health support. This is the project underwritten by various entities, in a public-private partnership - which have identified an important need in Italy to which an answer has not yet been given. This is why realities such as Inps, Cdp Real Asset, Policlinico Gemelli, Gemelli a Casa and Investire Sgr have come together to try to bridge the gap with the rest of Europe and launch a model of intergenerational senior housing, 'Spazio Blu', aimed at developing homes integrated by services dedicated to the psycho-physical wellbeing of the self-sufficient elderly.

The aim is to provide a range of on-site care services to avoid travel and hospitalisation and make life easier for the over-65s. A pilot project that also stems from the need posed by the ageing of the population. Today, of the total number of people living alone, 48.9 per cent are over 65. By 2042 this share is estimated to reach almost 60 per cent.

The entire country is involved, but the starting point is Rome. The capital is the chosen destination for the 130 million euro pilot project involving nine buildings (approximately 300 flats) in the Camilluccia-Trionfale district, with spaces dedicated to socialising such as living rooms, reading rooms, and cinema halls.

Covid has forced a rethinking of the spaces in which we live and work, so why not consider redesigning homes for the elderly that can provide answers to long-standing needs not contemplated in traditional living spaces?

What is the role of the different parties underwriting the initiative? Inps will contribute the real estate to the dedicated fund, while Cdp through its fund of funds Fnas will finance the redevelopment of the assets. Policlinico Gemelli and Gemelli a Casa will provide preventive healthcare services and telemedicine, telemonitoring and teleassistance. Investire Sgr will manage the real estate fund.
