Is ChatGPT the most widely used generative artificial intelligence in the world?

Generative artificial intelligence platforms continue to experience steady growth, with ChatGPT topping the list with 3.7 billion monthly visits globally. According to data from Similarweb, a web traffic and digital performance analytics platform, ChatGPT grew 17.2% month-on-month and an impressive +115.9% year-on-year. The peak occurred in May 2024, when it exceeded 2.2 billion visits, and the trend shows no signs of slowing down since then. Among the strategic moves made by OpenAI, the change of domain name stands out: from chat.openai.com to chatgpt.com, a decision that helped to increase the chatbot's visibility and familiarity. Meanwhile, OpenAI continued to enhance ChatGPT with new features. Among the most notable new features was the introduction of ChatGPT Search, an integrated search engine that provides real-time answers on any argomen. A move that brings the chatbot closer to Google's services, with which it seems to be competing more and more openly.

Among the artificial intelligence tools that are attracting more and more users are ChatGPT's competitors. Perplexity, despite recent allegations of plagiarism, recorded 90.8 million visits in October, a monthly growth of 25.5 per cent and an annual jump of 199.2 per cent. Google Gemini Chatbot totalled 291.6 million visits in the same month, up 6.2% month-on-month, driven by the introduction of new AI features in Chromebooks. Anthropic's Claude reached 84.1 million visits in October (+25.5% MoM and +394.9% YoY), thanks to the launch of a desktop app for Windows and macOS. Microsoft's Copilot, with 69.4 million visits (+87.6% MoM), and NotebookLM, one of Google's new Ai apps, increased its traffic by more than 200% in October with 31.5 million visits (+200% MoM), close the list. A year ago, when the application debuted, it averaged a few hundred thousand visits per month.
