Key points
On 21 June 2026, d’Amico Società di Navigazione announced in a statement that the Italian Navy had coordinated, in collaboration with the US Navy, the safe passage of the bulk carrier Yasa Moon through the Strait of Hormuz. According to information provided by the shipping group and confirmed by the Italian Navy, the operation began forty-eight hours after the signing of the preliminary agreement between the United States and Iran. In effect, the operation marks the Italian Navy’s first de facto operational deployment in the Strait of Hormuz following the agreement between the US and Iran, in coordination with the US Navy.
Meanwhile, the two Gaeta-class minesweepers, the Crotone and the Rimini, which have been stationed in Djibouti since June as part of the Atalanta anti-piracy mission, and which are formally part of the Aspides mission (Red Sea), are awaiting the government’s request for parliamentary approval for their deployment in mine-clearing operations in the Strait of Hormuz, under the umbrella of an international mission.
Statement from d’Amico Società di Navigazione
“d’Amico Società di Navigazione would like to thank the Italian Navy for its crucial support in facilitating the departure of the bulk carrier YASA MOON from the Persian Gulf, chartered by d’Amico Dry”, reads the headline of the statement released on Sunday 21 June by the family-run Italian group operating in the dry cargo and product tanker sectors of the shipping industry. “d’Amico Società di Navigazione,” the statement continues, “expresses its heartfelt thanks to the Italian Navy, and in particular the Naval Squadron, for the invaluable and constant support provided since the closure of the Strait of Hormuz on 4 March, and especially during the operations of the last few days, which have enabled the bulk carrier YASA MOON to safely exit the Persian Gulf.”
A bulk carrier has been involved
“The YASA MOON,” it is explained, “is a dry bulk carrier, also suitable for transporting project cargo, which has long been chartered by d’Amico Dry, a subsidiary of d’Amico Società di Navigazione. It is currently engaged in transporting a cargo of fertilisers. Following the serious operational difficulties caused by the closure of the Strait, the d’Amico Group has decided to support the owner of the YASA MOON by providing a crew from Sirius Ship Management, the Group company specialising in manning and crew management, who embarked specifically for this purpose two days ago to ensure the safe passage to safe waters.”
‘Operational coordination with the United States Navy’
«‘If this operation has been successfully concluded,’ the statement concludes, ‘the credit must go in particular to the Italian Navy, which ensured operational coordination with the United States Navy, which has been monitoring a safe shipping lane off the coast of Oman for the past fifteen days. It is thanks to this constant and determined presence that it has been possible to coordinate and protect the passage of the YASA MOON in an extraordinarily complex scenario.”
