Who is Salim El Koudri, second generation Italian and graduate
The young man is 31 years old and lives in Ravarino. He was reportedly under psychiatric care. Full investigation into the reasons for the gesture
Key points
He was born in the province of Bergamo 31 years ago, but lives in Ravarino, near Modena, Salim el Koudri, the man who, driving a Citroen C3, plunged onto the pavement murdering at least eight people in the centre of Modena. Investigations into his past are under way to try to establish the reasons for his act and to give more definite contours to an affair that seems to have no reason. The investigators are working to understand: the anti-terrorism nucleus of the DDA of Bologna is also investigating.
In the early hours of the morning, at around 1.30 a.m., the man, who is accused of murder and injury, was placed in the 'I Care' section, the area of the city correctional institution intended for inmates considered to be at risk of suicide and located near the infirmary. The 31-year-old shares a cell with another inmate.
At this stage, initial analyses carried out on the devices seized from the 31-year-old have not revealed any evidence of radicalisation or links to jihadist groups (Ansa writes, citing investigative sources).
Salim el Koudri was not known to the police: his criminal record has no record. He also graduated in economics and was currently looking for work, according to initial information gathered. However, he was reportedly being treated for psychiatric problems: on this issue too, however, investigators, with the support of the territorial services of the Modena Local Health Authority, are trying to reconstruct his medical history.
A second-generation Italian, therefore, with Moroccan origins, but from what emerges from the initial findings of the interrogation underway at the Police Headquarters and from the search that was ordered in his home in Ravarino, a small town about fifteen kilometres north-east of the regional capital, no elements have emerged that could suggest religious radicalisation or links with subversive formations. Investigations, however, are still ongoing on this front as well.
