A Chilean returns to play a semi-final of the Internazionali d'Italia in Rome after 15 years and more generally in a Master 1000 tournament. He is the surprise of the tournament Alejandro Tabilo, who had already managed to beat the world number one, Novak Djokovic, with a feat in the third round of the capital tournament.
The last Chilean to make it this high at the Internazionali d'Italia was Fernando Francisco González, who made it to the semifinals in 2009 (beaten by Rafa Nadal) and even made it to the final at the Foro Italico in 2007, only to be beaten badly by the Spaniard himself (6-2 6-2).
Alejandro Tabilo beat China's Zhizhen Zhang, number 56, in the quarter-finals with a score of 6-3, 6-4 in 1 hour 26 minutes. With this victory he will enter the top 30 of the ranking, at number 25.
A vertical growth for a player who, at the beginning of the year, was barely inside the top 100 in the world. In the semifinals he will meet one of the two current tournament favourites, Alexander Zverev or Taylor Fritz.
Meanwhile, from Rome comes good news for Italian tennis, despite the defection of Jannik Sinner and the elimination of all Italians in the Internazionali draw.
