China: Nexperia, exports of car chips to Europe resume
A few weeks ago, the Dutch government took control of Nexperia, owned by the Chinese company Wingtech, out of the need to protect Dutch and European economic and technological security. The move had prompted Beijing to block the export of Nexperia products from China
China has announced that it will exempt certain orders from the export ban on Nexperia components to Europe, which was imposed following a dispute with the Dutch authorities.
This global supplier of electronic components is at the centre of a standoff between China and the Netherlands, fuelling fears among car manufacturers of a production stoppage in Europe.
"We will carefully examine the actual situation of the companies and grant exemptions to exports that meet the criteria," a spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce said in a note. The resumption of shipments by chipmaker Nexperia is part of a trade agreement reached by Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Donald Trump after talks in South Korea last Thursday, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.
No comment from the Netherlands, talks with Beijing ongoing
The Dutch government does not comment on recent reports that the White House is ready to announce that the Chinese factories of the Dutch chip producer Nexperia will resume shipments.
The government, a note said, was still in contact with Chinese authorities and international partners 'to work towards a constructive solution that restores balance in the chip supply chain and is good for Nexperia and our economies'.
