Those who use generative artificial intelligence models via chatbots often find themselves having to enter the same prompt several times to perform similar tasks: in this regard, with the aim of simplifying this task and making it easier for users, Google thought of launching the Skill in Chrome useful for saving and reusing the most frequent prompts made to the AI so that they can be performed with a single mouse click.
As announced by the Mountain View company, the first tests have seen this novelty applied to realise customised workflows such as, for example, quickly calculating the macronutrients of a recipe or substituting ingredients to make it vegan, generating comparisons of a product's specifications divided over several tabs in order to evaluate a purchase, or scanning even long documents to find important information. Using them is simple, in fact, after launching a prompt that you wish to reuse frequently, it is possible to save it from the chat history, transforming it into a Skill; subsequently, to reuse it, simply recall it in Gemini on Chrome by typing '/' or clicking on the '+' button, then the command will be automatically applied to the page consulted and possibly also to other selected tabs.
The Skills are designed to the same security and privacy standards as Chrome, integrating the verification mechanisms already used in Gemini's confirmation requests. In other words, when a Skill has to perform a sensitive action, such as entering an appointment in the diary or sending an email, explicit authorisation from the user is always required before proceeding. In addition to this, there is also a multi-layered protection system, including security controls such as automated red teaming and constant updates to keep protection up to date with new threats.
The novelty will not be long in coming, and the implementation in Chrome for Mac, Windows and ChromeOS is already underway for all users who have set the browser language to English (United States); at the moment, however, there are no details about the release of the feature in Italian. Saved skills will be accessible from any computer running Chrome with the same account, and a library of ready-to-use actions for common tasks will also be released.
