The lifting operations of the new Pilots' Tower in the port of Genoa designed by Renzo Piano will be completed in the summer: it will be operational at the beginning of 2025. Cimolai Spa is proceeding in the Ponte Rubattino yard with the assembly of the metal carpentry that will form the truss on which the control cabin, also under construction, will rest. The new Pilot Tower will be 65 metres high in total, while the offices will be 59.80 metres high. The steel structures, which evoke the architecture of the old harbour quayside cranes, were machined in the Friuli factories and then transported to Genoa.
The board of directors of Cimolai Spa met under the chairmanship of Marco Sciarra, who has been at the helm since January (but with more than twenty years of experience in the company): "The positive results for 2023 and the current order backlog, despite the financial crisis of 2022, testify to the industrial solidity of our company and the process of improvement undertaken," he said, "aware of the trust that our customers, suppliers and credit institutions place in us, also confirming our solid international reputation with more than 75 years of history. The company has revenues of 290 million, in line with the previous year, 25 million Ebitda (+15% over 2022) and 8 million net profit from operations (+105% over 2022). There is an order backlog of EUR 810 million for the entire group.
Cimolai - headquartered in Porcia di Pordenone, a leading company in the metal construction sector, for more than 70 years engaged in the design, production and assembly of complex steel structures - marks with this balance sheet the overcoming of the financial crisis that led, in October 2023, to the approval of the composition with creditors in direct continuity by the Court of Trieste for the companies Cimolai Spa and Luigi Cimolai Holding Spa.
A financial crisis 'that has never stopped our construction sites and workshops,' Sciarra emphasises. Among the projects currently underway are the planet's largest telescope in the Atacama Desert in Chile, Lot 2 of Line 17 of the Paris Underground, the JFK bridges in New York (where further orders are being acquired), gas liquefaction modules for Baker & Hughes, and in the metropolitan area of the City of Milan, the Santa Giulia Arena and the new railway station in Sesto San Giovanni.
Also in Italy, work on the lifting of the new pilot tower in Genoa will begin in the summer. The result of the entire Cimolai Group, at aggregate level, reaches revenues of 390 million euro, confirming the values of 2022, while the order backlog as at March 2024 has reached 810 million, with contracts being defined for a further 200-250 million. The latest work awarded to Cimolai is the earthquake-proof renovation and improvement of the Borgo Roma hospital in Verona, for an amount of 40 million.
