Budget Bill: CISL says it is wrong to call a general strike without knowing the text
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - The CISL General Council, “whilst respecting the decisions of the other trade union confederations”, “does not support the call for a general strike against a budget bill the text of which is not yet known”. This is stated in the final document approved today by the CISL, which comments on the CGIL’s decision to call a general strike for 20 November.
“A general strike,” he emphasises, “is a measure of last resort, which must be based on specific objectives and concrete reasons, whilst avoiding becoming a vague or ideological initiative. Announcing it too early risks blurring the lines between trade union and political aims, undermining the very value of the strike and jeopardising industrial relations at precisely the moment when discussions on the new rules are underway.”
The CISL also considers it wrong to ask workers to forgo a day’s pay without yet knowing the details of the budget. Its position remains that of ‘negotiating in order to decide’, it emphasises, ‘whilst keeping open the possibility of joint action with other trade unions on the content, platforms and disputes’.
