Classical Neapolitan song, the Unesco candidature starts in Verona
Sal Da Vinci and Patti Smith at the Ministry of Tourism event to obtain recognition already granted to opera and Italian cuisine
There will also be Patti Smith and Sal Da Vinci at the Arena di Verona (live tonight 5 June from 21.30 on Rai 1) for 'Champions of the World-Italy loves Unesco', the initiative to remember the supremacy of the Belpaese for the number of sites recognised by Unesco (61) but above all to launch the candidature of the classical Neapolitan song after the recognition granted to the literary and to the Italian cuisine as intangible cultural heritage of humanity. An evening event wanted by the minister of tourism Gianmarco Mazzi that will take place in the presence of 100 Unesco delegates from all over the world (but not Russians).
Artistic performances of the most famous Italian opera arias will take place in the Amphitheatre, alternating with artists performing classic Neapolitan songs. The arias will be staged thanks to the commitment of 500 artists, with Orchestra, Choir and Ballet of the Arena, Plácido Domingo (together with Serena Autieri will sing Dicitencello Vuje), Vittorio Grigolo ('O sole mio), Gigi D'Alessio ('O surdato 'nnammurato), Sal Da Vinci (Tu can un chiagne), Serena Rossi (Era di maggio), Massimo Ranieri (Te vojo bene assaje), Gianni Morandi (Caruso) and Patti Smith, who will perform an aria and sing 'Because the night' in a symphonic version.
'I have loved this music since I was a child,' the punk rock artist said in a video message. 'It came to me when I was very sick and feverish, and Puccini's music gave me the will to live. Since then, I have been very devoted to the whole world of our opera'.
The scientific nomination dossier for classical Neapolitan song will be prepared by the study group led by Renzo Arbore.
