The shooter was a 15-year-old boy who was found in possession of the weapon (a Glock-type semi-automatic pistol) used in the attack.

Family scarred by tragedy

Uribe, considered one of Petro's most critical voices, was a member of the Democratic Centre, Colombia's main right-wing party. The latter is led by the influential Álvaro Uribe, who led the country between 2002 and 2010 (the two are not related).

Miguel Uribe belongs to a prestigious Colombian family, already marked by tragedy.

His grandfather, Julio César Turbay, an emigrant of Lebanese origin, was President of the Republic between 1978 and 1982. While his mother was the well-known journalist Diana Turbay, kidnapped in 1990 by a group in the pay of the notorious drug trafficker Pablo Escobar and killed a few months later in a failed rescue attempt.

The attack against the senator brings to mind precisely the violent methods associated with the Medellín cartel and its use of minors in deadly missions, especially in the 1980s and 1990s.
