After the courageous Dyson Zone, the headphones launched in the Covid era that not only sounded but also purified the air, we are now facing the official entry of the British group in the audio sector. The Dyson OnTrac are to all intents and purposes a quality product, with the stigmata of those born to innovate. Starting with the design, which also makes them aesthetically different from those on the market. They are eye-catching, metallic and enveloping. When you put them on, you realise it, even though the weight of 451 grams (almost double that of the competition) is partly mitigated by the memory foam cushions that make them extremely comfortable. As for aesthetics, they are largely customisable with the earcups that can be swapped into seven different colours. During a presentation, they explained to us that there are more than 2,000 possible combinations of outer earcups and ear cushions.
The strong point, however, remains the audio quality. Dyson's engineers chose to use 40 mm neodymium drivers that reproduce frequencies from 6 to 21,000 Hz. Also interesting is the choice of tilting the speaker 13 degrees to make access to the sound more direct and the eight microphones dedicated to active noise cancellation, which reaches up to 40 dB. Listening is quality: bass is important and the sound arrives in the headphones precise.
Another strong point is the autonomy, with active noise cancellation reaching a record duration of 55 continuous hours. The shortcomings are the weight and the absence of a jack cable for those travelling by plane. The 3.5 mm USB-jack cable and the aeroplane adapter, as well as the extra external earcup kit, are on sale for 49 euros.
On the market, they are up against the Sony 1000X M5, Sonos Ace and Bose QuietComfort Ultra. Audio quality is not in question, nor is the courage to innovate. If anything, design and price make the difference. The Dyson OnTrac headphones are available from the first of August at a price of EUR 499. They start on the Dyson channels, while they will only arrive in shops later.
