From 7 May at 4.30 pm, when the cardinals enter the Sistine Chapel, the cloistered regime begins, with no mobile phones or other contact with the outside world. Not only for the 133 cardinal electors, but also for all the staff, including the canteen workers. The Sisters Daughters of Charity of St Vincent De Paul, who run the Domus Santa Marta, also oversee the preparation of the meals. The menus served to the cardinals are the same as those usually prepared at Santa Marta when it operates as a normal hotel.
Light and light meals
.It starts in the morning with a light breakfast of tea or coffee, bread and jam. Light, minimally elaborate meals for lunch. First courses with rice and pasta with simple sauces. Main courses with white meat, baked fish. Grilled vegetables and salad as side dishes. Finish with seasonal fruit.
We take intolerances and health problems into account
.At the table there will be water and wine, while there will be no spirits. In the evening, dinner is even lighter. The menu served also takes into account food intolerances and regimes related to health problems, such as diabetes.
In Santa Marta jammers and anti-drone films
.To ensure total and effective isolation of the cardinal electors from the rest of the world, frequency jammers were installed to prevent mobile phones from receiving or transmitting: so-called jammers. In addition, special anti-drone and anti-laser spy films were mounted on the windows. Environmental clearance against possible bugs was accompanied by the usual checks. Given that it is a large facility, in order to prevent intrusion, temporary partitions and doors were also installed in Santa Marta to avoid any 'holes' through which people could break in.
