Consolidation in China: Faw-GAC strategic alliance
GAC will acquire the stake in the joint venture with Toyota in order to centralise the brand’s operations within a single supply chain.
The Chinese state-owned automotive giants FAW Group and GAC Group have signed a framework agreement on strategic cooperation to explore new industrial synergies. The agreement follows the announcement of a corporate restructuring plan under which GAC intends to acquire FAW’s 50 per cent stake in the FAW Toyota joint venture. The deal will enable GAC, which already operates the parallel GAC Toyota joint venture, to consolidate the Japanese brand’s presence and commercial operations in China, thereby optimising the supply chain, production and sales network.
With the transfer of shares from FAW to GAC, Toyota will be able to rationalise its operations in the Chinese market, overcoming the long-standing fragmentation between the ‘northern’ joint venture, FAW Toyota, and the ‘southern’ one (GAC Toyota). The agreement was signed by the state-owned holding companies Guangzhou Automobile Industry Group (parent company of GAC) and China FAW. The two companies intend to develop joint projects on key technologies, components and new energy vehicles (NEVs). The alliance is in line with Beijing’s directives, which encourage the consolidation of the domestic automotive sector to eliminate inefficient production capacity, curb over-investment and strengthen the competitiveness of Chinese brands in the transition to electric vehicles.
